Daniel Allison

(1780-1864)

By Christopher A. Meek

1. Daniel Allison was born about 1778 in New York according to census records. A birth date of 16 Jul 1777 has been reported but is unverified. It is believed that the family came from Orange Co. NY (later Rockland County) and moved to Greenbriar Co., VA (later West Virginia) in 1790. However, this information is also unverified. He died 19 Apr 1864 in Woodford Co., IL. His will was signed on 11 Jul 1863. The will was probated in 1864 but was contested and went to the appeals court. He resided in Gallia Co., OH in 1807 when he was appointed administrator of the will of Benjamin Allison. He was listed in the 1830 census of Perry TWP, Gallia Co., OH. In October 1830 Daniel Allison and his wife Margaret sold land, to Isaac Carter. It is presumed that they moved to Illinois at this time. He was listed in the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Woodford Co., IL. See note for information on sources.

He married Margaret Kincaid 30 Aug 1804 in Greenbriar Co., West Virginia, daughter of George Kincaid and Margaret Renick. She was born Apr 1785 in Greenbriar Co., West Virginia, and died 01 Aug 1857 in Woodford Co., IL. (Note: "The Renicks of Greenbrier" by B. F. Harlow,, p. 32 we find that George Kincade b. 1744, Augusta Co., Va., married Margaret Renick, b. 1751, and had 12 children. Three of their children married Allisons: Samuel Kincaid m. Mary Allison in 1807. Margaret Kincaid m. Daniel Allison 30 Aug. 1804 Thomas Kincaid m. Jemima Allison dau. of Benj.)

Note:
Source for this family includes Daniel's will. Many DOB's and other information from The Benjamin Allison Family by Frances Copeland Stover 1972 found at the Bossard Memorial Library. Daniel was the administrator of Benjamin's estate in 1807 Gallia Co., OH. The relationship between Benjamin and Daniel is unknown. DNA testing has proven that Daniel and Benjamin shared a common ancestor according to the Allison DNA Project.

In the 1850 census Samuel and James were living with their father Daniel. In 1860 Daniel was living with his son Isaac. All lived in Woodford Co., IL. George died before 1850 and it is a mystery why none of his children were living with their grandfather or uncles in 1850. James was unmarried and Samuel appears to have been recently married. However, Isaac had a family and he followed some of George’s children to Boone Co., IA. George’s daughter Nancy was recently married in 1850 and none of the other children have been identified in the 1850 census. Several of George’s children migrated to Iowa.
